Two-Way Midfielder Johnston Set to Impact New ECU Program

Congratulations to PA 2020 midfielder / defender Carli Johnston, who has committed to play lacrosse at East Carolina University. Playing its inaugural season under Head Coach Amanda Barnes Moore in 2018, ECU lacrosse is a program on the rise, especially with the addition of Johnston!

“Carli is a quick, smart, tough midfielder that is a great connector in transition, potent on offense and tough on the defense. She is a tireless worker and is a force to deal with whenever she is on the field. She is fun, kind and supportive of her teammates and ultimately loves to see the team succeed. We can’t wait to see her make a statement at ECU,” explained Ultimate Lacrosse Head Coach Michele DeJuliis.

“I am thrilled to attend and play lacrosse at East Carolina University because everything about the school is a perfect fit for me,” explained Johnston. “Everything about the school is perfect including the academics, the campus, and the spirited community. I am thankful that I will be able to play under such an awesome and experienced coaching staff as well as playing alongside a great group of girls. Playing Division 1 lacrosse at a school of my dreams is an experience I will forever be grateful for. I want to give a big thanks to my Springfield High School coaches including Coach Broome, Coach Gieger, Coach Damato, and Coach Eastman for helping me become the strongest player I could be by pushing me to be better each year. I would also like to thank the Ultimate family, particularly DJ and Coach Duck who have helped me tremendously throughout the recruiting process as well as being huge role models throughout all my years at Ultimate.”

A well-rounded three sport varsity athlete (soccer, basketball, lacrosse), Johnston has earned a varsity letter during every season of her career at Springfield High School. She served as a junior captain on the soccer team this past fall and is currently having a standout basketball season. But Johnston’s true passion is lacrosse. A hard worker in the midfield, Carli is explosive in transition, doing whatever her teammates need her to do. Carli was a member of the PA National Tournament Team 2 in 2018. Outside of athletics Johnston is very involved in the Springfield High School community, where she is a member of Student Council, serves on the Student Athlete Leadership Group, and has recently been named to the National Honor Society. Once she arrives on the ECU campus Johnston plans to pursue a degree in nursing.

ECU finished their inaugural season at 2-15, earning the program’s first ever win over Gardner-Webb in a 15-14 victory on 2/18/18. In just their first season ECU came close to securing wins over Lafayette (11-9), Kennesaw State (17-14), and Longwood (17-13). During the 2019 season ECU is  currently 4-1, defeating Winthrop (13-12), Gardner-Webb (18-11), George Washington (10-9), and Delaware State (16-2) while suffering their only loss to #2 ranked North Carolina. Under the coaching staff of Amanda Barnes Moore, Emily Garrity Parros, and Lexi Cross the ECU Pirates are poised for success. A four-year starting goalkeeper at the University of North Carolina who played in four consecutive Final Fours, Head Coach Amanda Barnes Moore has been at the helm of ECU since the program's inception in 2016. Before ECU Barnes Moore coached at Duke, Boston University, and Ohio State, notably leading the Duke defense to a top-10 national ranking in scoring defense in 2012. At ECU Johnston will also have the opportunity to learn from Assistant Coach Emily Garrity-Parros, who currently plays midfield for the USA Women’s Lacrosse Senior National Team.

Good luck at ECU, Carli!
