Defender Petrone to play for the reigning MAAC Championship-Winning Fairfield Stags

Ultimate Lacrosse NJ 2020 defender Eva Petrone has officially committed to Fairfield University. A force in the competitive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Fairfield is coming off of a successful 2018 season where the Stags qualified for the NCAA tournament after winning the MAAC Championship.

“We are absolutely thrilled about Eva’s commitment to Fairfield,” explained Ultimate Lacrosse founder and Head Coach Michele DeJuliis. “Eva is such a hard worker. She is tough, feisty, and scrappy—an overall team player. Her determination and grit have gotten her to where she is today and we can’t wait to see her play at the next level.”

Petrone, who attends Princeton High School, is a stalwart defender. One of her biggest assets is her speed. An avid runner, as a member of the Princeton High School Cross Country Team Petrone earned the distinction of Fastest Freshman in Mercer County in 2017. Petrone is able to capitalize on this speed, sticking to attackers while also having the legs to push the pace of the game and spark offense off the clear. Named the Princeton High School Most Improved Player in 2017, Petrone continued to improve in 2018 as she was named an All-CVC Honorable Mention and played for the NJ National Lacrosse Team. With another two seasons to play before Fairfield, the sky is the limit for Eva!

“Committing to Fairfield University is a dream come true,” explained Petrone. “Everything that it has to offer is all I could ever ask for. I’d like to thank Coach Laura Field, Coach Anne Murray and Coach Kara McHugh for giving me this amazing opportunity. DJ has been there alongside me since day one and she is truly my inspiration. I want to thank my family and Princeton High athletics for pushing me to be my greatest. I look forward to being part of the Stag family!”

Fairfield is coming off of an impressive 2018 season (13-7 overall, 6-2 in the MAAC) where they advanced to the NCAA tournament after beating Canisius in the MAAC Championship game. It was the fourth overall MAAC Championship for Fairfield, and the first since 2015. Petrone will play under Head Coach Laura Field. Coach Field has coached at Fairfield for 10 seasons, starting as an assistant coach before becoming an Associate Head Coach in 2012 and eventually Head Coach in 2015. Field’s time at Fairfield has coincided with the program’s two winningest seasons, as well as a program-record 17-game overall winning streak and a stretch of 30 consecutive regular season victories over MAAC foes. Highlighted by their quartet of MAAC Championships, the Stags have reached the semifinal round of the conference postseason in all 10 of Field’s seasons on the sidelines. Several Ultimate grads currently play for Fairfield, including 2015 grad Kelly Pizzirani, 2017 grad Hailey Durkin, and 2018 grad Lizzy Walheim. Petrone will also be joined at Fairfield by 2019 Ultimate players Lily Allen and Elizabeth Talluto.
